The best-man is the chief male assistant to the bridegroom at a wedding. In North America and Europe, the groom extends this honor to someone who is close to him, generally either a brother or his closest male friend. While the best man’s required duties are only those of a friend, in the context of an American/European wedding the best man will typically:
-
assist the groom on the wedding day,
-
keep the wedding rings safe until needed during the ceremony,
-
act as a legal witness to the marriage,
and most importantly make a
toast to the bride and groom at the reception!
This is where many best-men get into trouble if the toast is not well prepared and thought out… There have been hundreds and hundreds of books written on the matter, here are a few hints I have gotten from the many sites and manuals available on this subject. Have you ever watched the acclaimed British comedy called “Four Weddings and a Funeral” staring Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell? If you haven’t rent it! If you’ve seen it, this should give you a pretty good idea of what goes into a traditional British wedding… No one throws a wedding like the Brits !… lots of tradition, inordinate amounts of flowers, lots of people, the mandatory extravagant hats, big old beautiful churches and great old castles. Although this award winning movie was a comedy, the British people are known as strict followers of tradition. Should you be lucky enough to be invited to a Destination Wedding in Great Britain, this will undoubtedly make this wedding ceremony a memorable event to watch and remember for years to come.
